The communities of the South Peace have a health care system that is well funded and includes many health professionals in many different areas.  Citizens are provided a wide range of services that help minimize the need to leave the area in search of specialized health services. 

Dawson Creek

The Dawson Creek Hospital has rehabilitation, diagnostic imaging, laboratory and up-to-the-minute Out Patient departments that provide quality services to the area.  There are integrated acute and community mental health programs that operate in Dawson Creek, along with addictions counseling and home and family support services.  Young citizens with special needs can find quality care at the Child Development Centre.  The Development Centre is a pediatric rehabilitation centre where children, from infants to age 19, may be referred for assessment and treatment of disabilities and/or development delays.  Rotary Manor is a state-of-the-art multi level senior citizen complex and services the specific needs of the Peace residents.  The facility has 44 rooms and an adult day centre.  There is also the additional South View supporting housing for seniors and is linked to the main building by a covered breezeway.  Rotary Manor provides a cost effective housing alternative for senior citizens.

Chetwynd and District Hospital provides medical services with four full time doctors 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  There is also ER and X-ray services that are provided 24-7.  There are out bed and long term care services and a respiratory therapist that provides service twice a week.  The mental and public health care departments for the area are also located in the hospital.  A new senior’s home has been constructed in Chetwynd.  Surerus Place is a 12 unit complex with four rooms being designated as assisted living and the remaining eight rooms being designated as supported living.  Little Prairie Haven is an older seniors complex with 12 units designated as independent housing.  Both Sererus Place and Little Prairie Haven are run by the Chetwynd Senior Citizen Housing Society.

In Tumbler Ridge all health related services are located under one roof at the Health and Social Services Centre which includes medical, optometric, ambulance, public health, counseling and emergency care.

Ministry of Health Services

The Ministry of Health Services overall responsibility is to ensure that quality, appropriate, cost effective, and timely health services are available to all British Columbians.  The Ministry works with health authorities, care providers, agencies, and other groups to provide access to care.  The Ministry also directly manages a number of provincial programs and services; programs include: The Medical Service Plan, which covers most physician services; Pharma Care, which provides prescription drug insurance for British Columbians; The BC Vital Statistics agency, which registers and reports on vital events such as births, deaths and marriage; and the Emergency and Health Services Commission, which provides ambulance services across the province.

Northern Health provides health services to 300,000 in the northern part of British Columbia which covers an area of 600,000 square kilometers.  They hold the responsibility of delivering health care across northern BC including acute care, mental health, public health, addictions, and home and community care services.
